Halloween 2026 in Europe: Festivals, Club Nights and Strange True Stories
Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, which makes this a good year to travel for it. Europe is where the night began, and the continent now offers everything from Celtic fire rituals to castle horror shows and theme-park parades. We checked every event below against its official website, with dates as published in October 2026. After the festivals you'll find a guide to Halloween club nights in Berlin, London, Milan and other cities, and then a few strange but true Halloween stories, all with sources.

Strange but true: curious Halloween cases
No urban legends presented as fact here. Each story below is backed by a record body, an official organiser or a reputable outlet, and the one legend is labelled as a legend.
1,369 vampires at Whitby Abbey
In May 2022, to mark 125 years of Dracula, English Heritage gathered 1,369 people dressed as vampires at Whitby Abbey, the ruin that helped inspire Bram Stoker. It is still the Guinness World Records title for the largest gathering of people dressed as vampires. Not a Halloween date, but hard to beat for atmosphere. (Source: Guinness World Records, BBC News)

15,458 zombies in one street party
The record for the largest gathering of people dressed as zombies belongs to the Zombie Pub Crawl in Minneapolis: 15,458 participants on 11 October 2014, on the closed-off streets of the Warehouse District. (Source: Guinness World Records)
30,581 lit jack-o'-lanterns
On 19 October 2013 the city of Keene, New Hampshire, lit 30,581 jack-o'-lanterns at its Pumpkin Festival, a record that still stands. Keene has broken this record eight times since its first attempt. (Source: Guinness World Records)
A pumpkin record broken twice in one week, this month
On 3 October 2026, British grower Ian Paton set a new heaviest-pumpkin record of 1,295.8 kg in Berkshire. A week later, on 10 October, Ron Wallace of Rhode Island beat it with a 1,431.5 kg pumpkin, the first ever over 3,000 lb. Guinness World Records says a record changing hands that fast is almost unheard of. (Source: Guinness World Records)
Racing in hollowed-out giant pumpkins
At the pumpkin exhibition in Ludwigsburg, Germany, which the organisers bill as the world's largest, people race across a lake sitting inside hollowed-out giant pumpkins. Paddlers must be at least 14 and able to swim, and should bring a dry change of clothes in case they capsize. The 2026 regatta took place on 19–20 September; the exhibition itself runs until 1 November. (Source: Blühendes Barock Ludwigsburg, exhibition page)
The Martian panic that mostly wasn't
On 30 October 1938, the night before Halloween, Orson Welles' radio drama The War of the Worlds presented a Martian invasion as breaking news. Next morning's papers reported mass panic, but historians and media researchers have since shown that the "nationwide hysteria" was largely exaggerated by newspapers. The real Halloween trick was the headlines. (Source: BBC News, Slate)
Legend check: "Dracula's Castle"
Bran Castle is marketed as Dracula's Castle, but that is mostly legend. The historical Vlad III never owned it; at most he may have stayed there, and firm evidence is lacking. Bram Stoker never visited Romania. The nickname comes from tourism in the 1960s and 1970s, and the castle's own site reminds visitors that "Dracula exists in the imagination". (Source: Snopes, citing tourism scholar Duncan Light)
Dressing for a European Halloween

Most of these nights happen outdoors, in late October, often in the rain, and some events (Traumatica, for one) don't allow costumes at all. That's where dark streetwear makes sense: warm layers, black on black, something that looks right by firelight and still works on the flight home. Browse our jackets, the Halloween collection, or what's New, and see five ready-made looks in our gothic Halloween outfits guide.
